Nestled within the historic Minas do Palácio Velho in Ouro Preto, Brazil, this proposal for a museum of gold delves into the intricate interplay between gold, mining, and the profound narratives of colonization and slavery that have shaped the region’s history. Drawing inspiration from the Baroque pearl necklaces, the design is organized along a meandering circulation path. The path seamlessly weaves through a series of dispersed exhibition rooms via bridges and staircases, mirroring the undulating topography of Ouro Preto. Contrast and surprise are the two main drivers of the design. Through the journey, the visitors enjoy the contrast between various natural and processed materials, and experience different relationships with the ground. Each exhibition space has its unique spatial characters to surprise the visitors.
Echoing the prevalence of timber in the local architecture, the project selects charred wood for facades. Golden metal marks the entry points and circulation pathways as well as emphasizes the purpose of the space, a museum of gold.
The first exhibition space, the Dark Room: One is guided by a granite walkway through the room, and the gold objects are exhibited on the water. The dark room creates an atmosphere where the exhibits are glittering in a dim and intimate space.
Second exhibition room: Golden Room: The medium-scale exhibition space that is half inserted into the mountain. Lighter toned stones, wood tiles, and concrete are used for a warmer atmosphere.
The final exhibition space, Hall of Angels: It showcases the religious artifacts. The space is completely subterranean. Compared to the former two rooms that has linear circulations, the final hall is an open space that encourages the visitors to wander freely and observe the artifacts from all perspectives.
